Thailand’s industrial sector is at a critical juncture of transformation, presenting a unique opportunity to operate vocational colleges and equip the future workforce with top talent. Faced with this challenge, vocational professionals are working to improve the system, believing that this will not only enhance the learning experience for vocational students but also strengthen their employability and ability to contribute to society.

A quick search reveals that Thailand’s vocational education system comprises 416 universities and 673,000 students. However, as in many countries, Thai students generally prefer general education over vocational training, although demand for vocational training has increased in recent years.

One approach that could be taken is to incorporate more learner-centered experiences into vocational education. Recently, a UNESCO report on six Asia-Pacific countries—including China, South Korea, and Thailand—put forward this recommendation and raised two thought-provoking questions: How can vocational education systems most effectively develop learner-centered learning materials? And how can technology be effectively utilized in the learning process?

These issues align with the new demand for smart learning methods (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) in other areas of education, which is why so many people are interested in them.

They may not be able to immediately change the limited recognition that vocational educators receive for their contributions—they deserve far greater respect. But I believe they can begin to bring about change. Here are a few examples:

Enhancing Educational Impact: Leveraging technology allows vocational colleges to maximize the impact of their existing professional educators. This will help educational innovators address the shortage of educators through new approaches.

Planning and Sharing Experiences: Vocational education requires individuals who can teach practical skills, and technology and learner-centered strategies can effectively achieve this goal on a large scale. Smart learning enables educators to reach more people and distill key insights, allowing students to deepen their understanding at their own pace.

Maximizing Resources: Vocational colleges can leverage technological resources to achieve more. High-quality platforms and content are readily available, providing opportunities for continuous learning to keep pace with rapid industry advancements and changes. Smart learning experiences also help foster more natural and effective connections between industry professionals and students. Imagine the casual, social learning opportunities made possible through Zoom, where students can explore their interests and gain real-world insights and advice from experienced professionals.

Imagine this: no travel, no textbooks, no stressful preparation—just exploration and exchange among like-minded people. Educational technology allows universities to integrate content from leading providers without having to develop it from scratch themselves. I’m no expert in this area, but this approach has already yielded positive results in other fields of study—and it’s more challenging than ever before.

People from all walks of life in Thailand are confident that they will be able to achieve some remarkable results, including:

Rapidly increasing the number of graduates prepared for future careers: We clearly understand which skills are needed, and more learner-centered experiences can develop these skills more quickly. Universities have the capacity to rapidly enhance the competitiveness of students entering the job market, thereby strengthening the talent pool for Thailand and Thai companies.

Developing More Capable Contributors: This issue isn’t limited to vocational students; I believe vocational schools are already doing a pretty good job in this regard. However, in many conversations with senior managers, they often express a desire for new employees to be productive from day one. Currently, companies must invest time and money in basic training, which limits economic productivity and hinders the innovation process.

Building Stronger Connections and Communities: Establishing and maintaining ecosystems can strengthen relationships and increase opportunities for collaboration. While formal partnerships are just one part of this, personal connections and support can provide vocational students with internships, apprenticeships, and real-world experience.

Digitally Proficient Professionals: Everyone needs to improve their digital skills. Just look at how the skills required of auto mechanics have changed dramatically. The digital world requires more digital learning opportunities across most industries and a reduction in analog learning.

I look forward to seeing vocational students and universities incorporate elements of smart learning, and I am confident that they will not lose out on anything as they explore these possibilities. This shift does not require a large investment; it simply calls for a bit of innovative thinking and a flexible mindset.
